Diaper Machines

It all started with a simple question from one my friends - "Why dont you get into manufacturing of disposable diapers?" and for a minute, I stopped to think about it and tried to picture a diaper making machine. Then i searched in Google and the picture on the left is what a diaper machine looks like. It can be quite intimidating in size. Different machines have different capacities but on an average, they say a machine can churn out 200 diapers per minute.
The average cost in India ranges between 8 to 10 Crores, as we dont make them here. We have to import them from China or other countries. Personally, I dont think it will work in Indian conditions, but i believe of late, a few brave entrepreneurs have taken the risk of manufacturing diapers in India. The simple truth is that it is still cheaper to import them from China, Thailand, Turkey etc. Even though we are the second largest population in the world, we still do not manufacture disposable diapers.

Nappy Pads vs Disposable Diapers

Nappy pads are just like sanitary napkins and are stuck on to your baby's cotton nappies.
It might take a couple of attempts to get it right. However, it does provide comfort and relief from disposable diapers to babies.
Couple of brands of nappy pads now have elastic bands (similar to disposable diapers) on the sides to stop the urine from spilling out.
Nappy pads are good for short duration changes. They are good because they do not cover the baby's bottom completely like diapers, thus leaving space for the skin to breathe.
It is good to use nappy pads, if your baby is trying to recover from a diaper rash. It is the better environmental option between the two and hosiery diapers being the best environmental option.

It also happens to be the most economical option, averaging of 3 nappy pads for the price of 1 diaper, approx depending on the brands.

But it does not replace disposable diapers. It is good to use nappy pads during summers.
Not an ideal item to use if you are going for an outing, as it doesnt stay in place all the time. If you wish for a longer sleep in the night, using a diaper for your baby would be a better option, as nappy pads can absorb at the maximum two pee's, depending on output, leading to more changes which wakes up baby and yourself and guess every one else around.

Nappy Pads

Until recently, I was not aware of any other brand in nappy pads space except for Johnson & Johnson. Suddenly, there are some big brands like: Huggies, Wiprosoft and soon EasyFit.

I can't put it down only to diversification because I'm sure, there must be a large enough market or margin and hence the new entrants.

Well, the benefit for us - is that the prices are getting competitive.

For eg. J&J sells 20 pcs for MRP 115 which works out to Rs. 5.75/- per piece.

Huggies followed the same pricing but gives a better margin to the retailers, allowing them to pass that on to consumers.

Wiprosoft made it more competitive at Rs. 60/- for 12 pcs. That makes Rs. 5/- per pc.

Soon, if not already, EasyFit will be entering the market with Rs. 275/- for 60 pcs which makes it Rs. 4.60/- per pc. They have added one more feature to the nappy pads. They have added leak guards as well and I think that's a pretty smart thing to do. So it has most of the features of a diaper at half the price of a diaper.

Heat Sensitive Spoons

These heat sensitive spoons from Nuby are excellent, especially if your baby is just starting out on solids be it home-made mixes or Cerelac. The working is fairly simple. Half the spoon turns white immediately indicating that the food is too hot for consumption. Then you need to wash the spoon, wait a couple of seconds for it to regain its color. The edges of the spoon are so soft that your baby will love chewing on the spoon too. It doubles up as a very good teether.

Wet Wipes

The wet wipes market is relatively new in India. There are a lot of unknown brands that are actually doing well in the market. I'm surprised that Pampers, Huggies, Johnson & Johnson havent introduced their wipes in India in a big way being the 'Grand Old Daddies' of baby products. Either they havent yet realised the market potential or they are making too much from their existing business, that they cant keep up.

There are many options - one for every one, meaning if you like scented or non-scented, alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Now, Himalaya has introduced an Ayurvedic option. Its very nice and also priced well at Rs. 30 for 24 wipes, though it does have a strong Indian lotus scent.

There are a lot of benefits to using wet wipes, especially if your child has got a cold and you dont want to give your baby a bath but still give him / her a fresh feeling, then use a wet wipe. Dip it warm water during winter time and use it as is during summer time. And ofcourse, we cannot discount its usefulness when we travel.

Bella Wet Wipes are also very wet, non-alchoholic and non-scented, rather mildly scented. They are available in Bangalore, I'm waiting for it to be introducted in Hyderabad. I find MeeMee wipes very strongly scented and find Pigeon wipes over priced. Squeel wipes are pretty good and very cost effective at Rs. 125/- for 80 wipes. Another brand of wipes that I have heard a few mom's mention is FunBaby wipes from Tainwala. Havent checked it out yet but will do so shortly. Do post your feedback on the brand of wipes that you use for your baby. Would love to hear of new brands.

Wingo Diapers is a good quality Plastic Backsheet Diaper, imported from Malaysia. It is similar to Huggies Care. Currently, avaialable in Mumbai, Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, it is giving LIDO, a good competition.
Reasonably priced at Rs. 135/- per packet. That is 21 pieces in Small, 19 pieces in Medium, 16 pieces in Large and 14 pieces in XLarge. Definetly worth a try.

Matey Bubble Bath liquid

I have yet to meet a child who does not like a bubble bath. However, for kids we cannot use a normal shampoo or an adult bubble bath liquid as it will burn their eyes and make that fun pass time, not so much fun.

Surprisingly, I have not seen a good economically priced bubble bath liquid for kids in the Indian market. Well, atleast not in Hyderabad.

I use Matey, an imported one for my daughter. It's price in the local market varies between Rs. 345/- to Rs. 375 /- for 500 ml and I'm desperately looking for a cheaper alternative. Many have suggested using Johnson & Johnson Top to Toe but I feel we definetly have to use more of the liquid than Matey to get the same volume of bubbles. Matey is nice but I'm sure the Indian companies can come up with economically priced bubble bath liquid.

Johnson Top to Toe

Mild ... Mild ... Mild. J&J Top to toe or head-to-toe is so far the mildest soap for babies. It can be used for both head as well as body and therefore makes most sense. One of my favourite products from Johnson. Just dont understand why they have still not introducted it in the Indian Market. Well, its available at most super markets in India. I have not read a single negative review on this product. Infact, many parents use the same as a bubble bath alternative to strong smelling bubble bath liquids.

Finger Toothbrushes

One of the best items invented for kids. I went looking for finger toothbrushes many months ago and found that many brands had them. All are moreorless the same in quality but the prices varied based on whether it had a case or just the brush in blister packing. I bought one with the case cause you really cant keep the finger brush in a toothbrush holder.

My daughter loves chewing on the brush, so much so she just takes control of it. The minus point is that i've lost a few finger toothbrushes.

Anyway, the point i'm making is that, since all the finger toothbrushes are the same, and if you already have a case, then might as well buy an economical one. The best priced one I've found so far in the Indian market is MeeMee Finger Toothbrush which costs Rs. 55/-

Himalaya Baby Care products

As parents we usually go for the tried and tested cosmetics for our children. Johnson&Johnson, its almost synonymous for 'baby'. However, i have tried other brands and with good advice from my mom, i first tried them on myself and then on my baby. I found the Himalaya products to be a lot better than Johnson and Johnson. Some findings:
1. Take the J&J Soap for instance, it burns the eyes. Try it, yourself. My daughter has a habit of playing with the soap in the tub and by mistake she rubbed her eyes with it and she was howling. I tried Himalaya soap, it doesnt burn the eyes.
2. The Himalaya Oil has a lot more volume than the J&J Oil. You will feel the difference. If you use the Himalaya oil and then try the J&J Oil, it feels like water.
3. I swear by the diaper rash cream. Its simply amazing. I do put a generous helping, but in 6 hrs or lesser, the redness of the rash disappears and my daughter is a lot less hasseled.
But at the same time, i cannot discount the fantastic, soothing fragrance of J&J. So, I kind of feel that since we like the fragrance so much, we 'think' its good for our babies. My daughter too likes the fragrance :-) .... but i just cant ignore the goodness of Himalaya. So, I use the Himalaya Oil for her massage before bath and use J&J Lotion for after bath.

In India, J&J is still using talc in their powder preparations, but any good book will tell you that talc irritates a new born baby. In the US and Canada, J&J is using corn starch in the preparation of baby powder.
In India, I've seen in hospitals that nurses douse talc all over babies. It's not recommended, cause it confuses the baby. When a baby is born, he/she gets comfort from the familiar smell of his or her mom. Try it out yourself and you will see your baby will be calmer and less irritable. After 3 months, they have adjusted, the lungs are stronger and can bear the talc. The same with your perfume, avoid putting it on yourself for the first 6 to 9 months and let your baby enjoy your familiar scent. Later on, you can put your t-shirt on a pillow and your baby will sleep as comfortably next to the pillow, as he/she sleeps next to you.

Another recent entrant into Hyderabad, India. This is a European Brand, has its presence in Chennai and Bangalore. The diapers are manufactured in Poland and imported into India. Reasonably priced, fully breathable. Available in 2 pack sizes, 5+1 and 10+2. Good quality diapers. The weight mentioned on the packets could be misleading as European babies have broader builds than Indian babies, so xs 2-4 kgs will be for 3kgs to 5kgs.

Diapers .. Diapers .. Diapers

As per requests from many mom's and dad's, we've tried our best to document, the various brands of diapers available in the market. This is not an exhaustive list but we've tried to cover the basic ones.

When we started dabbling in the indian retail diaper business just 18 months ago, there were just two brands of diapers available - Huggies and Pampers.

Both were premium products having distinct features. Huggies was with a PE backsheet and sticking tags whereas Pampers had cloth feel backsheet with velcro tags and was scented. Prices bordered on expensive. Average Rs. 12/- per piece in 2005-2006.

Then, the next biggest entry was that of Xtracare products, Bangalore with 3 brands - DryFirst, CumfyDry and Lolla's. DryFirst was their premium product, the other two being their economical options.

At the same time, there were many generic brands mushrooming (being imported) in other parts of the country that were not largely marketed but mostly available in the metros like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi.

And, soon these brands entered Hyderabad and Bangalore because of good demand for diapers.

But, as usual they were all modeled after Huggies and Pampers. So, in essence there are two types of diapers: a) PE film backsheet and b) Cloth-feel backsheet.

Brands such as Koochies, LIDO, Teddyz, Nappiez, Wingo, Concept have PE (plastic) backsheet with sticking tags. These are the economical brands. The back sheet is non-breathable.

Premium brands are Huggies Ultra, Pampers Active Baby, Pampers, Royal Orchid, Kiddo, DryFirst, Drypers, Wiprosoft. All have breathable back sheet.

The next distinguishing factor was velcro tags (multiple sticking) or sticking tags. Every parent figures out which works best for their baby. Some prefer velcro and many prefer the softer sticking tape kind.
Velcro options are: Huggies Ultra, Pampers Active Baby, Pampers, Royal Orchid, Kiddo.
Sticking tags options are: Drypers, Wiprosoft, DryFirst.

The rest is all standard specification, super absorbent polymers, double leak guards.

Coming to selection of a diaper for your baby, there are many factors, namely, the weather, the fit and most importantly the diaper your baby feels most comfortable with. It is not true that economical diapers give diaper rash. And it is also not true that velcro tags are always better than sticking tags. Diaper rash can be caused by many reasons, which we will devote a separate section to and also how to treat diaper rash.

Most parents use a good combination of economical as well as premium diapers. The main difference between PE film and breathable cover, is that:
PE film diapers retains heat and smell within the diaper which can irritate the baby's skin, if kept on for long periods of time. And they need to be checked a couple of times to see if the baby has pooped.

But in the case of breathable diapers, the whiff of your baby's poop will reach you :)
